Qualifications
To become a Notary Public in the State of Utah, you must meet all of the following qualifications:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be a U.S citizen or have permanent resident status under Section 245 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
- Must lawfully reside in the State of Utah or be employed in the state for at least 30 days prior to applying for a notarial commission and maintain permanent residency or employment thereafter.
- Be able to read, write, and understand English.
- Pay for and pass the online exam.
- Submit to the mandatory background check.
- Upload a copy of your notarial bond and Oath of Office containing no significant misstatement or omission of facts.

Step 1: Study for the Test

Step 2: Create Your Account
This step is necessary to create your application and begin the test. Please ensure you meet the qualifications listed above before starting.

After taking the test, be ready to pay the $95 administration fee* immediately. Results are provided instantly upon payment.
If you fail, you must pay an additional $40 re-testing fee each time until you pass. (Note: this offer is valid for 30 days from the first test date.)
*The cost of the test is non-refundable.
Step 4: Background Check
As of November 1st, 2019, all applicants must submit a mandatory background check.
Please note: You will not be notified when your background check has been processed. Please continue to the next step without waiting for results.Step 5: Obtain $5,000 Notarial Bond
The name on your Notarial Bond must match the name on your Notary Application. You must sign your Notarial Bond as the principal for it to be considered valid.

Step 7: Upload & Submit
- Double-check the information on your application page.
- Upload your Original Signed Bond.
- Upload your Notarized Oath of Office.
- Optional: If you need to explain past crimes, upload a separate document with explanations.
Step 8: Purchase Stamp & Journal
After your application is approved and you receive your Certificate of Authority, you must purchase a notarial stamp and journal through a third-party company. The notary office does not provide stamps or journals.
